About This Piece
“Common Ground”, a sculptural environment created by Barbara Grygutis for Commons Park, is the centerpiece of an urban renewal project in Downtown Denver, where the Platte River flows through the city center. Created of subtly mottled pink and gray rhyolite, “Common Ground” is a sensuous 200 foot long serpentine pathway that leads the viewer to a special place 10 ft above ground level, over looking the Platte River, providing exceptional views of the city of Denver. Along the pathway windows cut into the stone make vistas of the surrounding landscape available to all; the pathways of the sculpture are lit from within and during the evening the light and stone create a soft glow. The sculpture utilizes the naturally occurring stone, sand and earth dug from the site where the sculpture is built. The stone was cut and fit on location and built piece by piece in the style of old world craftsmanship.
