About This Piece

Sandy Toland’s “Bird House, Light House and Tree House” refers to ideas that evoke positive feelings of safety, strength, freedom, growth, loftiness, wisdom and creativity. The work consists of three pieces – a bird, tree and sun – mounted on the lobby wall. This artwork is also intended to be welcoming, engaging, and whimsical. Wordplay is used in that the bird, sun and tree contain images of objects. When the word for the main image is combined with the images within it, another common word phrase is made. For example, the bird has a dog’s head (bird dog), an eye (bird’s eye view), a baseball (foul ball) and netting (poultry netting).
