About This Piece

This piece was initiated by the Denver City Council, as a commissioned portrait of late councilman William Scheitler. The City of Denver approved naming the recreation center from the previous name of Berkley Recreation Center to the William A. Scheitler Recreation Center, in honor of his long service as councilman to the district. The portrait was created for display in the recreation center as a memorial in his namesake. Bill Scheitler helped give Denver funding for the arts, revitalized neighborhoods, protected skyline views and was the driving force behind the late-1970’s “Orange Crush” Broncos promotions.
