About This Piece

From the artist’s proposal: At the heart of my work is retranslation of historical photographs. I approach a found photograph as I would a subject directly before me in nature – as raw material. While I retain the journalistic elements of an image, I add layers to it through my use of color and paint application. For this project, rather than focus on a particular event at the amphitheater, I prefer to look at the development stages of the site, perhaps choosing a construction phase that would illustrate the effort and vision that went into the creation of this remarkable facility.
